A QUICK OVERVIEW...
- The MCW Department of Anesthesiology is part of eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center. Our clinical practice utilizes a physician-led anesthesia care team model, which includes CAAs, CRNAs, and Anesthesiology residents and fellows.
- The wide scope of our organization and our practice means that there are opportunities for subspecialization, and involvement in areas of interest such as quality, simulation, mentoring, faculty development and more.
- As part of an academic medical practice, one of our core missions is the education of future anesthesiologists and anesthetists. Our faculty members teach medical students, student Anesthesiologist Assistants, and residents, as well as fellows who are training in anesthesia subspecialties. In addition to clinical training, there is also opportunity for faculty to give lectures, facilitate workshops and more.
- And, as an academic institution, our faculty are encouraged to contribute to clinical and basic-science research, to publish in academic journals, and to attend and present at meetings and conferences.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for excellent anesthesiologists to join our:
- General Anesthesiology faculty
- Pediatric Anesthesiology faculty
- Obstetric Anesthesiology faculty
- Community Division (ASCs and community hospitals) faculty
- Anesthetists (CAAs and CRNAs)
While these are our current areas of need, we are always looking for excellent physicians in all subspecialties who will help us advance our patient care, education and research missions.
WHAT'S THE CALL LIKE?
We know what most of our potential faculty want to know - what's the call like??
Of course, it varies by specialty. Here’s a high-level overview:
General OR
- Overnight, we staff to faculty. These are typically staffed seven days on, seven days off. Most of the time, people volunteer for these rotations. We do split the weeks when needed based on requests from faculty.
- On weekend days, we have one faculty onsite. The other is a call position. These are 12-hour shifts. The person on call usually comes in for a portion of the time each day. The goal is one weekend day shift per month. This can vary depending on staffing.
Cardiac
- We have a 1st call and 2nd call on each night and the entire weekend. Our goal is a full-time faculty stay around 96 calls per year. This can vary depending on staffing. First call is activated more often, about 65 percent of the time. Second call is rare.
CVICU
- We staff seven days on, seven days off, 12-hour shifts, 24 hours per day. We do have a second faculty Monday-Wednesday during the day. All positions get equal post-call time based on days worked.
RAAPS
- One person on call per day. The goal is 96 calls per year for a full-time faculty. On weekends, they typically are onsite Saturday and Sunday for some of the daytime hours.
OB
- We staff seven days on, seven days off, 12-hour shifts for nights. These can be split up. These shifts do get equal post-call time based on nights worked. During the day, there are two faculty on-site during the week. One faculty on during the weekend day.
Pediatrics
- Pediatric anesthesiologists provide 24/7 coverage for all surgical/procedural anesthesia, non-OR anesthesia, at 22-26 anesthetizing locations per day, including five at our pediatric ASC, Surgicenter, and provide continuous coverage in pediatric and cardiac ICUs, acute and chronic pain services.
- 1st call: In-house, approximately one in 20 days, next day off
- 2nd call: Approximately one in 20 days, not in-house, typically home by 9 p.m.
- Cardiac subgroup: 1st call typically one in five days, not in-house
DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION
Our goal is to foster a safe and welcoming environment for all patients and colleagues through the education and recruitment of anesthesiologists and anesthetists committed to celebrating each other’s differences and active engagement with the community.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee focuses on:
- Recruitment, by working to increase the diversity of our staff and residency and ensure that we foster a welcoming environment for all people joining our team.
- Education, by creating educational opportunities to give our Department the information and perspective needed to provide quality care to all patients.
- Community engagement, by working to support and improve our community through partnerships and collaboration with members of Milwaukee and the Regional Medical Center.
