"Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a city on the rise; so much so that it just joined our Readers’ Choice Awards list of the best big cities in the US, ranking third—just behind San Diego and Chicago. Long considered nearby Chicago's little sibling, Milwaukee has finally come into its own by growing amongst younger people for its affordability over the Second City, allowing people to buy homes and rent better apartments. Not to mention the growing restaurant scene, new infrastructure increasing walkability, and enough city amenities for the Midwest gem to truly feel desirable—it’s no longer just a small town. And with so many local colleges and a venerated art museum, there is strong curiosity and willingness to embrace the new." - Conde Nast Traveler, Oct. 2023

Find out why MCW residents and fellows take pride in calling Milwaukee home.
Ranked the No. 1 state to practice medicine
Did you know? Medscape recently ranked Wisconsin as the No. 1 state to practice!
Wisconsin's high physician compensation and low cost of living, high percentage of residents with health insurance, and the smallest number of malpractice filings over the past decade helped put us at the top of Medscape's list. Outside of work, we enjoy all four seasons, proximity to the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan makes up our eastern border) and more than 15,000 other freshwater lakes, professional sports with the best fans, a thriving dining scene (we were host to the most recent season of "Top Chef"), a state full of "Midwest nice" people and SO much more!

Living in Milwaukee
When we say "Milwaukee," we generally are referring to the greater Milwaukee area. This encompasses both the city of Milwaukee, along with a wide variety of nearby cities, villages and suburbs that fit any type of lifestyle you're looking for. Additionally, the cost of living in Milwaukee - particularly the cost of housing -Â is highly affordable compared to most of our other larger-city counterparts.
- Wauwatosa is immediately to the west of the city of Milwaukee, and the home of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus, where MCW, Froedtert Hospital and Children's Wisconsin hospital are located. Many of our faculty and staff choose to reside in Wauwatosa, for the proximity to work, the excellent school system, and its reputation as the "city of homes" with a wide variety of home and architectural styles, including many historic buildings. Parks and playgrounds abound in Wauwatosa!
- Shorewood and Whitefish Bay are to the north of the city, and the choice for many for its highly rated school system, beautiful parks and hiking/biking trails, and proximity to Lake Michigan. These cities also offer walkable downtown areas with a concentration of restaurants, shops, theaters and nightlife.
- Brookfield and Elm Grove are to the west of Wauwatosa. The further outside of the city you venture, the more space you'll get - these homes typically offer large yards that are great for families, pets, gardens, decks, firepits and more! Again, you'll find an amazing public school system here, beautiful parks (with beer gardens!), community theater, a quaint Elm Grove village and more.
- Muskego and New Berlin are southwest of Milwaukee. You will also find more modern homes and space in these suburbs, with plenty of room to grow!
- West Bend and Menomonee Falls are both towns where our community hospitals are located. Either is about a 20-30 minute drive from our main campus. Even with that short commute to the city, both of these communities offer a small-town, rural feel - but with all of the amenities of modern life.
- Downtown Milwaukee, including the Lower East Side and Third Ward, is home to many of our faculty. You'll get traditional city living in these areas - condos and apartments that are within walking distance to restaurants, shops, nightlife and more; and many of the residences boast sweeping views of Lake Michigan. During the summer, the city is bustling, with a different festival, outdoor concert or farmer's market happening weekly. The winter brings a skating rink, concerts and plays, and many opportunities to warm up inside one of our many cozy bars and restaurants!
We've listed just a small selection of the areas that our faculty choose to reside. If you have questions about what area might be right for you, our faculty members are more than happy to share their own experiences; or we can certainly recommend a realtor based upon your preferences. Just let us know!

Milwaukee IRL
Two of our former residents, Allie Taylor, MD, and Mark Wandzel, DO, created videos to help our potential residents learn a little bit more about what life in the Milwaukee area was like for them. Although they're not faculty, these videos give two very different perspectives of what is great about our city!
A Tale of One City: Version 1
Allie Taylor is 2022 graduate of our program who is currently completing a Pain Medicine fellowship. When she was a resident with us, she lived on the south side of Milwaukee with her husband and then-18-month-old daughter. Check out this video to see what life in MKE was like for Allie and her family!
A Tale of One City: Version 2
Class of 2022 resident Mark Wandzel showed us what his ideal weekend in Milwaukee was, when he was living on the upper East Side of Milwaukee.
